WHAT IS STRESS?
The term stress was first introduced in the 17th century. It comes from the words “estrictia” in Latin and “estrece” in old French. In the 17th century, it was used in the sense of disaster, trouble and misfortune. 18th and 19th centuries, when it comes to it, it has been used in the sense of pressure and difficulty. It was also used for spiritual structure.
Hans Selye (1907-1982), stress and stressor defined the concepts. Environmental stimuli that create a series of responses in an individual are called stressors. Hans Selye defined stress as an individual’s general response to various environmental stressors. In the following years, Folkman and Lazarus slightly changed this definition.
Lazarus and Folkman stress in person-environment interaction, one’s harmony as environmental demands that endanger and strain or exceed available resources they have defined.
